Preoperational Thought
Captions available
The idea
In the preoperational stage children think symbolically, using words and pretend play, but they tend toward egocentrism, difficulty seeing from another person's point of view.
In practice
A child assumes a viewer across the table sees the same side of a model mountain.
Where people slip
Preschoolers also reason precausally, as in animism, believing objects are alive, and artificialism, believing people made natural features.
