The idea
In a normal distribution, symmetric and bell-shaped, the mean, median and mode are equal; about 34 percent of scores fall between the mean and one standard deviation, 14 percent between one and two, and 2 percent beyond two.
In practice
About 68 percent of IQ scores fall within one standard deviation, from 85 to 115.
Where people slip
These proportions hold on each side of the mean.
