Educational Psychology / Unit 12   EDP 1122 short lesson, about 20 seconds

The Testing Effect

Captions available

The idea

Frequent tests promote learning and reduce cramming: the testing effect means that retrieving information strengthens memory for it more than restudying does over the long run.

In practice

Five minutes after study, restudying looks better; days later, students who were tested remember substantially more.

Where people slip

Tests are learning events, not only measurements.
