A portfolio is a purposeful collection of student work, varying on four dimensions: for or of learning, progress or current accomplishment, showcase or documentation, and working or finished.
In practice
A showcase portfolio holds a student's best essays; a documentation portfolio holds drafts showing growth.
Where people slip
Portfolios support self-reflection but cost time, and Vermont's statewide program had low interrater reliability.
