The idea
Asymmetric encryption, also called public-key cryptography, uses a key pair — the sender encrypts with the receiver's public key; only the receiver's private key decrypts.
In practice
A mailbox anyone can drop into, openable by one keyholder, is the pair in hardware.
Where people slip
The public key hides nothing; the private key does all the guarding.
