The Transposition Cipher

The idea
A transposition cipher rearranges plaintext characters rather than substituting them — writing a message vertically and reading it horizontally, for example — and the family is also called permutation ciphers.
In practice
A message striped across rail cars and read down the train hides by arrangement alone.
