The idea
An abstraction is a simplified representation of a complex system — it keeps the information that matters for the problem and ignores the rest.
In practice
A subway map drops streets, distance, and curvature, keeping stations and connections a rider needs.
Where people slip
What gets ignored is a choice, and choices serve purposes.
