Purpose

The idea
Purpose is the writer's reason for communicating, and it shapes every choice in a text.
In practice
Common purposes are to inform, to explain, to persuade and to entertain, and one text can serve several at once.
Where people slip
When a passage wanders, ask what it is for. Material that does not serve the purpose is usually what revision removes.
