The idea
A system of two lines is independent with one solution, dependent with infinitely many, or inconsistent with none — the lines parallel.
In practice
x + y = 3 against x + y = 5 collapses to 3 = 5: parallel, no solution. Doubled, 2x + 2y = 6 is the same line.
