The idea
A quadratic function's extreme value is its vertex output k: a minimum when the parabola opens up, a maximum when it opens down.
In practice
x² − 4x + 3 bottoms out at −1; g(x) = −2x² + 8x peaks at g(2) = 8 — the sign of a picks which story.
