State

Gravimetric analysis determines a sample's composition by causing a measurable change in mass, often by precipitating and weighing one component.

Dissolved chloride in a sample can be precipitated completely as AgCl, filtered, dried, and weighed to calculate the original chloride content.

Watch for

The precipitating reaction must go essentially to completion, or the measured mass understates the amount of the analyte actually present.
