An acid yields hydronium ions in water; a base yields hydroxide ions in water.

Hydrogen chloride gas dissolved in water reacts with it to form H3O+; solid sodium hydroxide dissolves to release Na+ and OH− directly.
Watch for
Dissolved acids do not release a bare H+ ion into solution; that proton transfers immediately to a water molecule, forming H3O+.
