Animal communication transmits information between a signaler and a receiver, often through a pheromone, a chemical released to trigger a response in another individual of the same species.
In practice
A foraging ant lays a pheromone trail other ants follow directly to a food source.
Where people slip
A pheromone signals within a species — a chemical cue read by a different species is not a pheromone.
