The idea
A trophic level groups organisms by feeding position: producers occupy the first level, primary consumers the second, successive levels each consuming the level below.
In practice
Grass is the producer level, a grasshopper eating grass the primary consumer, a bird eating the grasshopper the secondary consumer.
Where people slip
One organism can occupy different trophic levels — an omnivore eating plants and animals spans more than one.
