The idea
Population size is the total individuals of one species in a defined area; population density is that number divided by the area or volume occupied.
In practice
Two forests with the same number of deer differ in density if one forest is twice the other's area.
Where people slip
A larger population size does not imply higher density — count and spatial concentration are independent measurements.
