The idea
Temperature limits species distribution because enzymes and metabolism function only within a narrow range, so organisms must regulate internal temperature or inhabit environments holding them within it.
In practice
Few organisms persist below 0°C or above 45°C, reflecting the narrow window most enzymes tolerate.
Where people slip
Extremophiles surviving far outside this range are exceptions that confirm the rule — most life is narrowly constrained.
