An osmoconformer matches its internal solute concentration to its environment; an osmoregulator actively maintains an internal concentration different from its surroundings, regardless of external change.
In practice
A marine invertebrate osmoconforms with seawater; a freshwater fish osmoregulates to stay saltier than the surrounding water.
Where people slip
Osmoconforming is not the absence of regulation — a conformer can still regulate specific solutes while matching total concentration.
