The idea
Plasmodesmata are channels through adjoining plant cell walls that connect neighboring cells' cytoplasm, letting materials pass directly between them.
In practice
Water and nutrients absorbed by a root can move cell to cell through plasmodesmata on their way to the leaves.
Where people slip
Plasmodesmata cross both the wall and the membrane — a wall alone would otherwise keep neighboring cells apart.
