The idea
Endocrine glands release hormones in response to three stimulus types: humoral, from changing fluid composition; hormonal, from another hormone's signal; and neural, direct from the nerves.
In practice
Rising blood glucose is a humoral stimulus triggering insulin; TSH triggering thyroid hormone release is hormonal.
Where people slip
A gland can respond to more than one stimulus type — the adrenal medulla responds to neural stimuli, unlike most.
