The idea
A neuron's soma houses its nucleus and organelles, dendrites receive signals from other neurons at synapses, and a single axon propagates the signal to axon terminals.
In practice
A human motor neuron's axon can run as long as a meter, from the spine to the toes.
Where people slip
Most neurons carry one or two axons, but some, like retinal amacrine cells, carry none.
