The idea
Bioremediation uses a prokaryote's metabolism to break down or remove pollutants from a contaminated environment, rather than removing them mechanically or chemically.
In practice
Oil-degrading bacteria metabolize hydrocarbons from a spill, converting them into simpler, less harmful compounds as part of their normal metabolism.
Where people slip
Bioremediation works within a prokaryote's existing metabolic capability— it depends on choosing a species whose ordinary diet matches the pollutant.
