The idea
Gene flow is the movement of alleles between populations through migrants or gametes; a cline is gradual variation across an ecological gradient.
In practice
Pollen carried by wind between plant populations is gene flow; a species growing larger toward the poles shows a latitudinal cline.
Where people slip
Ongoing gene flow keeps a cline's variation gradual; restricted flow sharpens differences along it and can eventually drive speciation.
