Buffers

This video presents the same text shown beside it, spoken and on screen. It adds nothing the text does not say.

State

A buffer is a substance that resists a change in a solution's pH by absorbing or releasing hydrogen ions as conditions shift.

Show

A bicarbonate buffer in lake water absorbs excess hydrogen ions from runoff, keeping the water within a range fish can survive.

Watch for

A buffer moderates a pH change within a working range; it does not hold pH fixed against every addition.
