Primase and the RNA Primer

This video presents the same text shown beside it, spoken and on screen. It adds nothing the text does not say.

State

Primase synthesizes a short RNA primer complementary to the DNA template, giving DNA polymerase the starting point it needs.

Show

A primer roughly five to ten nucleotides long is laid down before DNA polymerase adds a single DNA nucleotide.

Watch for

DNA polymerase cannot start a strand from nothing — every new DNA strand begins from an RNA primer, later removed and replaced.
