A score becomes a verdict by comparison with a threshold — folding the threshold into the sum as a starting balance makes positive-means-yes the only rule needed.

"Score beats 5" becomes "minus 5 plus the weighted features beats 0" — same verdicts, the threshold now a knob.

The fold matters because learning can then move the threshold by the same nudging as every weight.
