Analyzing and Interpreting Literature / Unit 10   AIL 0922 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Which Type Is Austen's Narrator

Captions available

The idea

Apply the two-question test: not a character in the events, and able to report the minds of the surrounding families collectively as well as the Bennets individually. That is the omniscient narrator of the glossary's definition, used ironically rather than as a god handing over facts.

In practice

Omniscient, and ironic with it.

Where people slip

Omniscient does not mean trustworthy.
