Analyzing and Interpreting Literature / Unit 10   AIL 0925 short lesson, about 20 seconds

"Dreadful to Me Was the Coming Home"

Captions available

The idea

Brontë inverts the clause, putting the predicate before the subject. Unit two taught that parse: the coming home was dreadful to me. The inversion throws the weight onto dreadful, which is the first word of feeling in the book and is placed for emphasis.

In practice

Inversion places the emphasis.

Where people slip

Unit two's parse is needed here.
