Narrative Distance

Captions available

The idea

Distance is how near the telling stands to a character's own way of seeing, and it can change from sentence to sentence within one passage. The glossary has no term for it. Noticing a shift in distance is often what an exam question about a passage's development is asking for.

In practice

Where people slip
