Analyzing and Interpreting Literature / Unit 9   AIL 0839 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Trap: Assuming Every Sonnet Turns at Nine

Captions available

The idea

Line nine is the usual place, not the only one. Shakespearean sonnets sometimes hold the turn to the couplet, and Sonnet seventy-three has no turn to find. A candidate who answers from the convention rather than the page will misread both kinds.

In practice

Nine is usual, not universal.

Where people slip

Some sonnets do not turn at all.
