When a Couplet Overreaches

The idea
Because a couplet sounds final, it can assert more than the twelve lines earned. Readers have argued that several of Shakespeare's couplets do exactly that. Noticing the gap between what a poem demonstrated and what its ending claims is a genuine reading skill and an examinable one.
In practice
The ending can outrun the argument.
