Analyzing and Interpreting Literature / Unit 8   AIL 0745 short lesson, about 20 seconds

The Limits of the Period Clue

Captions available

The idea

Poets write in older forms deliberately. McKay wrote closed forms in the nineteen twenties, and a modern sonnet is common. Treat form as weak evidence about period, useful for ordering your expectations and never for settling a claim on its own.

In practice

Weak evidence, held lightly.

Where people slip

McKay is the standing counter-example.
