Analyzing and Interpreting Literature / Unit 8   AIL 0737 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Trap: Naming a Form From Its Subject

Captions available

The idea

A poem about a death is not necessarily an elegy, and a poem addressing a season is not necessarily an ode. Subject suggests form and does not settle it. This is unit four's trap in a new place: answering from the topic rather than the evidence.

In practice

Subject suggests; measurement settles.

Where people slip

The same trap as in tone questions.
