Analyzing and Interpreting Literature / Unit 7 AIL 0651 short lesson, about 20 seconds
These Figures Are Not Only Poetic
Captions available
The idea
Prose and drama use every figure in this unit. Swift's proposal runs on sustained irony; Fielding's greatness is a metonymy for criminality. The terms carry across the exam's genre bands, so this unit is not spent when the poetry items are finished.
In practice
The terms carry across all genres.
Where people slip
Prose and drama use them equally.
