Analyzing and Interpreting Literature / Unit 7   AIL 0654 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Blake's Manner

Captions available

The idea

Blake works the opposite way: short poems, plain words, and symbols left unexplained. Nothing in The Sick Rose is difficult to read and nothing in it is settled. Where Donne's images are proved, Blake's are placed and left, which is a different reading task.

In practice

Plain words, unsettled symbols.

Where people slip

Placed and left, not proved.
