Analyzing and Interpreting Literature / Unit 7   AIL 0629 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Keats and the Other Senses

Captions available

The idea

Keats writes that he cannot see what flowers are at his feet, nor what soft incense hangs upon the boughs, but in embalmed darkness guesses each sweet. Sight is withdrawn and smell replaces it. The passage is an argument for imagery that is not visual at all.

In practice

Sight withdrawn, smell supplying.

Where people slip

Keats removes the visual deliberately.
