The Exam Edits What It Prints

The idea
Sheridan wrote that when an old bachelor takes a young wife, and capitalised his nouns freely. The board prints marries and modernises the capitals. The sense is preserved, but a candidate should expect regularised spelling and punctuation rather than an original text.
In practice
Regularised, not reproduced exactly.
Where people slip
Modern spelling does not mean modern writing.
