Analyzing and Interpreting Literature / Unit 1 AIL 0031 short lesson, about 20 seconds
A Procedure for a Poem

The idea
Find the sentence inside the lines first, ignoring line breaks. Name the speaker and the situation. Then look for the turn, the point where the argument or the feeling changes. Most poetry questions are answered somewhere in those three moves.
In practice
Sentence, speaker, turn.
Where people slip
Line breaks are not sentence breaks.
