Analyzing and Interpreting Literature / Unit 4   AIL 0305 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Tone Lives in Sentence Shape

Captions available

The idea

Short flat sentences and long winding ones project different attitudes with the same vocabulary. Rhythm, subordination and where a sentence puts its weight all carry stance. Unit two's parsing work pays off here, because a sentence's shape must be seen before its manner can be judged.

In practice

Rhythm carries stance too.

Where people slip

Two carriers, not one.
