Analyzing and Interpreting Literature / Unit 1 AIL 0019 short lesson, about 20 seconds
The Speaker Is Not the Author
Captions available
The idea
A passage is spoken by a voice the writer makes. That voice may be a fool, a villain, a child or a corpse. The exam asks what the speaker feels and never what the writer felt, so answers reaching toward biography go wrong.
In practice
The voice, not the hand behind.
Where people slip
Biography is the commonest wrong turn.
