Analyzing and Interpreting Literature / Unit 18   AIL 1745 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Trap: Reading Satire as Sincerity

Captions available

The idea

The century's level manner makes satire hard to hear. Unit four's Swift and unit twelve's contrast with Equiano both exist for this. A passage whose content is monstrous and whose manner is calm is more likely satirical than sincere, and unit five's persona test settles it.

In practice

Calm manner, monstrous content.

Where people slip

Unit five's test settles it.
