Analyzing and Interpreting Literature / Unit 15   AIL 1430 short lesson, about 20 seconds

A Direction the Editor Added

The idea

The anchor's Twelfth Night prints a direction telling Viola to include the audience as she says she is not what she is. That instruction is an editor's reading, not Shakespeare's text, and amendment V-9 forbids making a teaching point of apparatus. The line works without it.

In practice

That direction is an editor's.

Where people slip

Apparatus is never the teaching point.
