Analyzing and Interpreting Literature / Unit 14   AIL 1331 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Concealment as a Device

Captions available

The idea

Hiding a character on stage produces dramatic irony mechanically: someone hears what was not meant for them. Hamlet's soliloquy is overheard, and Sheridan's comedy turns on a man concealed behind a screen. One stage direction can set up a whole scene's irony.

In practice

One direction, a scene of irony.

Where people slip

Concealment generates the device.
