Analyzing and Interpreting Literature / Unit 14   AIL 1328 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Why Asides Tend Comic

Captions available

The idea

The convention that nobody hears is transparently artificial, and artifice that everyone can see tends toward comedy. A soliloquy asks an audience to forget the theatre; an aside asks them to enjoy it. That is a real difference in what each device does.

In practice

One hides the theatre, one enjoys it.

Where people slip

The artifice is visible on purpose.
