Analyzing and Interpreting Literature / Unit 13   AIL 1238 short lesson, about 20 seconds

The Limits of Foreshadowing Claims

Captions available

The idea

Almost any early detail can be read as preparing something later, so the claim is easy to make and hard to support. Require that the detail be conspicuous and that the later event actually match it. An option calling something foreshadowing on a thin resemblance is overreaching.

In practice

Conspicuous, and actually matched.

Where people slip

An easy claim to overreach on.
