Analyzing and Interpreting Literature / Unit 13   AIL 1237 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Foreshadowing

Captions available

The idea

Foreshadowing is an early detail that prepares a later event. The glossary has no headword, though it defines flashback, which is its mirror. Oedipus's curse foreshadows his own exile, and the audience recognises it as foreshadowing only because it already knows.

In practice

An early detail, preparing a later one.

Where people slip

Flashback is defined; this is not.
