Analyzing and Interpreting Literature / Unit 13   AIL 1217 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Oedipus, the Standard Case

Captions available

The idea

The glossary names Oedipus as probably the most famous example of dramatic irony. The play has a king seeking the murderer of his predecessor, and the audience knows before he does that the murderer is himself. Every line he speaks about the hunt is doubled.

In practice

The hunter is the hunted.

Where people slip

Every line about the hunt is doubled.
