The Audience Must Be Told First

Captions available

The idea

Dramatic irony needs the audience to hold information the character lacks, so a play has to deliver that information before the ironic scene. Finding where the audience was told is the reliable way to locate the irony, and the telling is usually recent.

In practice

Find where the audience was told.

Where people slip

The telling comes shortly before.
