Analyzing and Interpreting Literature / Unit 2   AIL 0118 short lesson, about 20 seconds

The Endings -est and -eth

Captions available

The idea

Thou takes a verb ending in -est, so thou goest means you go. The third person takes -eth, so he goeth means he goes. Both endings are ordinary in older writing and neither adds meaning beyond the person of the verb.

In practice

Thou goest, he goeth.

Where people slip

The ending marks person, nothing more.
