A Procedure for a Nonfiction Passage

Captions available

The idea

Find the thesis in the first and last sentences. Ask what the passage must establish, which names the mode. Ask whether the voice is owned or adopted. Then read for the appeal a named sentence is using. Four steps, and the third is the one that prevents the worst error.

In practice

Thesis, mode, voice, appeal.

Where people slip

Step three prevents the worst error.
