Analyzing and Interpreting Literature / Unit 11 AIL 1002 short lesson, about 20 seconds
Direct and Indirect Characterisation
Captions available
The idea
Direct characterisation states a trait; indirect shows behaviour and leaves the trait to be inferred. The glossary defines neither phrase, so these are the standard senses. Indirect is commoner and is where the exam's inference questions live, because the reader has to do the work.
In practice
Stated, or shown and inferred.
Where people slip
Indirect is where the questions are.
